- Mamata Banerjee warns of citizenship threat after voting rights
Hyderabad, March 26: Mamata Banerjee has said that the BJP, the Central government, and the Election Commission are weakening democracy. She alleged that they have taken away the right to vote of the people and may soon take away citizenship.
She made these remarks while launching her election campaign in Mayanagudi in North Bengal, which she described as a BJP stronghold. She spoke in the context of the upcoming assembly elections. Meanwhile, she accused the BJP of misusing constitutional institutions in the name of the Special Comprehensive Amendment.
She said the release of the supplementary voter list created concern. “The release of the supplementary voter list caused a stir at midnight. We got independence at midnight. We are proud of that. But they have forgotten independence. They are not following the constitution and democracy. Now they have taken away the right to vote. Later they will take citizenship in the name of NRC. The royal family and women have been severely affected by the revision of the voter list. The names of the royal family have been removed by SIR. Th3e names of the women have also been removed. 220 people have died in Bengal so far due3 to SIR. Their souls are crying out. Since time immemorial, the BJP has been calling those living in the country foreigners. They have to prove their citizenship. Before that, you (addressing the BJP leaders) should prove that you are citizens of this country,” Mamata criticised.
She further called on people to act politically. “Say goodbye to this big man here (CEC Gyanesh Kumar) and the two big men in Delhi (Modi and Amit Shah),” Mamata call3ed on the people. The remarks targeted Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.
Her speech focused on concerns about voter lists, citizenship, and the role of institutions. Therefore, the campaign message centered on protecting democratic rights. Meanwhile, the statements added to the political debate ahead of elections.
