The number of medical colleges has also risen from 818 to 823 nationwide.
Of the total colleges:

- 382 are Private Medical Colleges
The latest NMC data shows:
Government Medical Colleges

Overall, 1,27,028 seats have been renewed, while 9,911 new MBBS seats have been added for the upcoming academic session.
The NMC clarified that the figures do not include seats offered by premier institutions such as:

These institutions conduct admissions through separate mechanisms despite NEET-UG qualification.
The expansion in seats is expected to improve access to medical education and accommodate a larger number of qualified NEET-UG candidates during the 2026-27 admission cycle.
