Hyderabad: Modi Israel visit drew sharp criticism from Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti, who said the Prime Minister’s trip was against the country’s policy and not a good sign for Mahatma Gandhi’s India. She also referred to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “criminal” and questioned the diplomatic outreach.

Speaking to reporters in Anantnag, Mehbooba Mufti said, “I think our country’s policy is against it. Today, the whole world opposes Israel PM Netanyahu.” She further said, “The International Criminal Court has indicted him. He does not visit many countries for fear of arrest. Modi, who represents 140 crore people, goes there and hugs a criminal, meets and talks to him, I think, it is not a good sign for our country, for Gandhi’s India.”

Through her remarks, the PDP chief linked the Modi Israel visit to India’s stated foreign policy position. She suggested that engaging with Netanyahu sends a message that does not align with the values associated with Mahatma Gandhi. Meanwhile, her comments come at a time when global reactions to Israel and its leadership remain under scrutiny.

In addition, Mehbooba Mufti spoke about the upcoming panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir. She said the elections should be conducted because people at the ground level face many problems. She stated, “People believed that after the government was formed, their difficulties would be resolved, but they are not being addressed. So, Panchayat elections should take place, and I request the people not to see a party, but elect good persons so that they serve them tomorrow.”

Therefore, along with foreign policy concerns, she highlighted local governance issues in Jammu and Kashmir. She urged voters to focus on capable candidates rather than party lines. Meanwhile, her remarks have added a political dimension to the debate surrounding the Modi Israel visit and local elections.
