Nations League | Internet, Sept. 23: More than 160 Irish sportspeople have urged the Republic of Ireland football team to boycott its upcoming Nations League fixtures against Israel.
The open letter, organised by the Irish Sport for Palestine Group, calls on Ireland players to refuse to participate in the two matches. The fixtures are scheduled for September 27 and October 4.
Nations League Fixtures Draw Boycott Calls
In July, FAI delegates voted 75 to 32, with three abstentions, to endorse the decision to fulfil the Nations League fixtures against Israel.
The FAI said fulfilling its competition obligations was necessary while continuing its engagement with UEFA.
FAI chief executive David Courell has acknowledged the strength of public feeling surrounding the matches.
He said the association was in a difficult position because of the lack of action from UEFA.
The latest appeal has added another layer to the debate surrounding Ireland’s Nations League fixtures, with the matches against Israel due to take place later this month and in early October.
