Hyderabad, July 17: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to Telangana authorities over allegations that a private school in Hyderabad’s Saidabad made Islamic religious lessons and prayers compulsory as homework for students.
The Commission has sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Director of School Education, the Hyderabad District Magistrate, and the Hyderabad Police Commissioner. It directed the authorities to conduct an inquiry and submit their report within two weeks.
NHRC Orders Inquiry Into Religious Lessons in Hyderabad School
The NHRC acted on a complaint alleging that the Saidabad school assigned Islamic religious lessons and prayers through official school diaries.
According to the complaint, parents questioned the school management about the entries. However, the management reportedly described them as a mistake despite similar instructions appearing repeatedly.
The Commission observed that, if the allegations are found to be true, they could amount to a violation of the human rights of the students.
Taking cognisance of the complaint, the NHRC directed the concerned authorities to investigate the matter and submit their findings within the stipulated time.
The inquiry will examine the allegations and determine whether any violations of students’ rights occurred. (Maxim News)
