New Delhi, July 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the future belongs to hydrogen and asserted that Indian Railways will gradually reduce its dependence on diesel and electricity as hydrogen powered trains become part of the network.
The Prime Minister made the remarks after flagging off India’s first hydrogen fuel cell powered train at Jind Railway Station in Haryana.
Addressing the gathering, Modi said hydrogen trains represent the beginning of a new revolution in rail transport. He added that only three to four countries currently possess the capability to operate hydrogen powered trains.
He said India’s first hydrogen train is the world’s longest and most powerful in its category. The 10 coach train operates at a speed of 70 kmph and will run on the 89 kilometre Jind to Sonipat route in Haryana.
Modi said the project is an important step towards environmentally sustainable transport and will help reduce diesel and electricity consumption in the railway network. He added that Haryana will be remembered for hosting the country’s first hydrogen train.
The hydrogen train uses advanced fuel cell technology to generate electricity onboard by combining hydrogen with oxygen. The process produces only water vapour as a byproduct, making it a near zero emission mode of transport.
Compared to conventional diesel trains, the hydrogen powered train generates less noise and offers cleaner and more sustainable travel.
Equipped with a 3,200 horsepower propulsion system and ten coaches, the train is recognised as one of the most powerful hydrogen powered passenger trains in the world. (Maxim News)
