New Delhi, July 17: India has retained the intellectual property rights for its indigenous hydrogen train technology, opening the door for future exports, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the country’s first hydrogen fuel cell powered train in Haryana.
Vaishnaw said hydrogen is emerging as a key clean fuel worldwide. He added that Indian Railways has developed a fully indigenous 2,400 kW hydrogen propulsion system for the transport sector.
The minister said the project reflects the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat and strengthens India’s position in green transport. He described the launch as a major milestone in the railway modernisation programme undertaken during the past 12 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Vaishnaw said India owns the complete intellectual property rights for the indigenous hydrogen train technology. As a result, the country can explore opportunities to export the technology in the future.
The 10 coach hydrogen fuel cell powered train will operate between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. The nearly 90 kilometre journey will take about two hours.
The train uses a 3,200 HP propulsion system that generates electricity onboard through hydrogen fuel cells. It emits only water vapour, making it one of the cleanest forms of rail transport.
Developed entirely with indigenous technology, the project places India among a select group of countries operating hydrogen powered passenger trains.
The launch also highlights Indian Railways’ transition towards cleaner energy after electrifying more than 99 percent of the country’s broad gauge network. The initiative supports India’s long term sustainability goals while reducing dependence on diesel fuel. (Maxim News)
