‘No Power Can Decide What India Should Do’: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar
New Delhi/Hyderabad, July 20 (Maxim News): Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar strongly asserted India’s sovereignty and independent decision-making, emphasizing that no external force can dictate how the country should manage its affairs. His remarks come amid recent controversial statements regarding alleged international involvement in India-Pakistan ceasefire negotiations.
Speaking to the 2024 batch of officer trainees of the Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES) at the Vice President’s Enclave in New Delhi, Dhankhar said, “No one in this territory dictates how India should conduct its affairs, and the people here will not be guided by outside narratives.”
He emphasized that while India is part of the global community and engages in diplomatic dialogue and mutual cooperation, its core values rest on self-governance and national pride.
“We live among other countries. We work together with mutual respect. But ultimately, we are sovereign—and we make our own decisions,” Dhankhar added.
Backdrop: India Denies Trump’s Ceasefire Mediation Claims
Dhankhar’s comments come at a time when former US President Donald Trump has publicly claimed that the United States brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan by presenting them with a trade deal. Trump also alleged that five fighter jets were downed during the conflict.
India has categorically denied these claims, reiterating that the ceasefire agreement on May 10 was a direct result of dialogue between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations—without any foreign mediation.
New Delhi has maintained that the India-Pakistan Line of Control (LoC) ceasefire was a bilateral decision, reaffirming India’s long-standing position that all matters with Pakistan must be resolved bilaterally, without third-party involvement.
Key Takeaways from Dhankhar’s Statement:
- India’s foreign and defense policies are determined independently, based on national interest.
- External narratives or claims, particularly unverified ones, will not influence the country’s direction.
- Sovereignty and dignity remain non-negotiable pillars of India’s governance and diplomacy.
