Hyderabad, Mar 29: The Telangana Assembly has passed the Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026, making it mandatory for public representatives, government employees and private sector workers to financially support their elderly parents.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said the legislation aims to strengthen the financial security of senior citizens and goes beyond the provisions of the existing Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.
Salary deduction for neglecting parents
Under the new law, employees and elected representatives who fail to take care of their elderly parents could face a salary deduction of 15 percent or ₹10,000, whichever is lower, with the amount to be directly paid to the parents.
The Chief Minister described the Bill as part of the government’s social responsibility to promote moral values and ensure dignity for senior citizens.
“This is not just legislation but a social message. Those who neglect their parents should be held accountable,” he said during the Assembly debate.
Inspired by real-life cases
During the discussion, Revanth Reddy referred to the case of industrialist Vijaypat Singhania, who reportedly faced hardship after transferring his assets to his son, highlighting the need for stronger legal safeguards for parents.
He said it was unfortunate that such a law had become necessary, adding that caring for parents is a basic responsibility in society.
Support across parties
Minister Konda Surekha said the Bill would help change societal attitudes towards elderly citizens and emphasised the need to clearly define responsibilities towards parents.
BJP MLA Payal Shankar supported the Bill, calling it a first-of-its-kind initiative and suggested that the penalty amount could be increased further.
CPI MLA K. Sambasiva Rao also extended support to the legislation during the Assembly proceedings.
Expanding the scope of existing law
Officials said the new state law expands the scope of the central legislation by including private employees and elected representatives, aiming to create stronger accountability mechanisms.
The government believes the measure will help ensure respect, care and financial protection for elderly parents across the state. (Maxim News)
