Hyderabad, April 20: A 300 year old stepwell at Osmania University has been restored after a major clean up and conservation effort on World Heritage Day.
The stepwell, located in Adikmet, had turned into a dumping site with nearly 3000 tonnes of waste. Authorities and volunteers completed restoration work over three years.

The project was led by architect Kalpana Ramesh with support from the Society for the Advancement of Human Endeavour. Financial assistance came from Dodla Dairy.
The restored stepwell now supplies 20000 to 35000 litres of water daily for plantation activities on campus. A filtration system has also been installed to ensure water quality.
Officials said the water source could later support university hostels housing around 5000 students. The project highlights Hyderabad’s historic water systems and sustainable practices.
Experts noted that several other stepwells on the campus need urgent restoration. The initiative is seen as a step toward preserving the city’s water heritage.
