According to Pakistani officials, preliminary investigation indicated cross border links. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Taliban administration in Afghanistan of allowing militant groups to operate near the border, an allegation Kabul has previously denied.

Pakistan has witnessed an increase in attacks targeting security forces in recent years, with authorities frequently attributing them to Tehrik e Taliban Pakistan.
