Windhoek/New Delhi, July 11: In a historic diplomatic move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Namibian President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at the State House in Windhoek on Thursday, marking the first Indian Prime Ministerial visit to Namibia in 27 years. This was also the first bilateral State Visit hosted by President Nandi-Ndaitwah since taking office in March 2025.
Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed with a ceremonial reception, and both leaders engaged in wide-ranging discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in key sectors such as defence, maritime security, agriculture, healthcare, energy, digital technology, and critical minerals.
Shared Vision and Strategic Partnership
The leaders acknowledged the historical bonds between the two nations and paid tribute to Namibia’s Founding Father, Dr. Sam Nujoma, who passed away earlier this year. PM Modi extended his condolences and congratulated President Nandi-Ndaitwah on her election as Head of State.
Discussions centered around:
- Boosting bilateral trade
- Fast-tracking the India-SACU Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA)
- Enhancing capacity-building efforts and development cooperation
- Establishing joint manufacturing facilities in Namibia
PM Modi also offered India’s support for Quick Impact Development Projects across agriculture, cyber security, healthcare, education, women’s empowerment, and child welfare. He highlighted India’s success in drone-based farming, proposing potential collaboration to benefit Namibian agriculture.
Global Cooperation and Shared Challenges
The two leaders exchanged views on global issues of mutual concern, including terrorism, disaster resilience, and the role of the Global South. PM Modi thanked Namibia for its solidarity following the Pahalgam terror attack, and both leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening the global fight against terrorism.
Key Agreements and Initiatives Announced
Following bilateral talks, two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged:
- Health cooperation
- Entrepreneurship development
Additionally, Namibia:
- Joined the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure
- Became a founding member of the Global Biofuels Alliance
- Became the first country to adopt India’s UPI digital payment system under a licensing agreement
PM Modi also expressed appreciation for Namibia’s support in India’s Cheetah reintroduction program and invited the country to join the International Big Cat Alliance.
Diplomatic Hospitality
President Nandi-Ndaitwah hosted a state banquet in honor of PM Modi, reaffirming the strength of Indo-Namibian friendship. Prime Minister Modi, in turn, invited her to visit India at a mutually convenient time to continue the momentum in bilateral relations.
