Hyderabad, August 22: The Centre denied political clearance for Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s proposed US visit, citing concerns over the planned programme.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the proposed programme was not appropriate to the office held and the purpose of the visit.
Reddy was scheduled to travel to the US after completing his UK visit. However, he will now return to Hyderabad instead.
Revanth Reddy US Visit Linked To Reported Mamdani Meeting
Reports said Reddy’s proposed US programme included a possible meeting with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Diplomatic sources said this meeting was among the factors considered while denying clearance.
However, the MEA has not officially identified the Mamdani meeting as the reason for rejecting the visit. The Telangana government has also disputed reports about such a scheduled meeting.
Reddy’s proposed itinerary included engagements with educational institutions and other meetings in the US. The state government had sought clearance for both the UK and US legs of the trip, but only the UK visit was approved.
Mamdani has previously made remarks critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian political and judicial matters. His reported correspondence with jailed activist Umar Khalid also drew criticism from the Indian government.
Meanwhile, the cancellation has triggered a political debate in Telangana over the Centre’s decision and the reasons behind it.
