Delhi, May 25: United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday downplayed allegations of rising anti India rhetoric in the US and stated that President Donald Trump is a “big fan” of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Rubio made the remarks during his ongoing four day visit to India, which is focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
His comments came amid controversy over a viral video in which he responded to a reporter’s question regarding alleged racist remarks against Indians and Indian Americans in the United States.
Rubio Rejects Anti India Allegations
Addressing the controversy, Rubio said social media platforms often contain comments from “stupid people” and questioned the credibility of many online statements.
“The President is a big fan of India and Prime Minister Modi. I would not be here if the President did not value this relationship,” Rubio said.
He also pointed out that Trump had appointed Sergio Gor as ambassador because of his close ties and confidence in strengthening India US relations.
Rubio clarified that the reporter who raised the issue did not specify any particular individual or incident while referring to anti India remarks.
The controversy erupted after Rubio’s interaction with reporters on Sunday went viral on social media.
Many linked the question to earlier controversial remarks by Donald Trump in which he allegedly referred to India and China while criticising immigration and birthright citizenship policies.
During the media interaction, the reporter asked Rubio about racist comments targeting Indians and Indian Americans and whether such rhetoric could affect India US relations.
Rubio responded by saying every country has “stupid people” and suggested that many online comments may not even come from genuine individuals.
The US Secretary of State stressed that relations between India and the United States remain strategically important and strong.
Rubio’s India visit is seen as an effort to improve diplomatic engagement after bilateral ties faced challenges in recent months.
Political analysts believe the statement was aimed at reassuring India about Washington’s commitment to maintaining stable and friendly relations.
