Amaravati, May 25: The Andhra Pradesh government has declared an Ebola alert following the rapid spread of the virus in several African countries, including Congo, Uganda and South Sudan.
State Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav said the Medical and Health Department has already begun precautionary measures to prevent any possible spread of the virus in Andhra Pradesh.
The minister stated that the government is closely monitoring the evolving Ebola situation after warnings and advisories issued by the World Health Organization and the Central government.
Screening Intensified At Airports
Health authorities have started screening passengers arriving from Ebola affected countries through international airports in Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Vijayawada.
Officials said close coordination has been established between airport authorities and district medical teams to identify and monitor suspected cases.
Passengers showing symptoms linked to the Ebola virus will be immediately quarantined and tested.
The minister also confirmed that people who recently travelled from affected countries and develop symptoms within three weeks must immediately inform health officials.
Isolation Wards Prepared In Hospitals
The Andhra Pradesh government has established dedicated isolation wards with 15 beds each in teaching hospitals located in cities with international airports.
The Health Department has also ensured the availability of PPE kits and virus diagnostic testing kits for emergency use.
Officials from all levels of the Medical and Health Department, including ANMs and ASHA workers, are being alerted through virtual meetings and training sessions.
Government Prepares Emergency Action Plan
Satyakumar Yadav said the state government is preparing a detailed action plan based on lessons learned during the COVID 19 pandemic.
The minister added that district administrations and port authorities have also been instructed to implement preventive measures.
Special monitoring arrangements are being made for travellers entering through road routes in addition to air travel.
The Health Minister appealed to the public to avoid non essential travel to Congo, Uganda and South Sudan until further notice.
He assured that the Andhra Pradesh government is fully prepared to handle any emergency situation related to the Ebola virus.
