‘SIR’ Will Be Held Across India In Phased Manner: ECI
Delhi/Hyderabad, Oct 10 (Maxim News): The Central Election Commission is likely to start the process of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list across the country in a phased manner.
EC officials said that the SIR process is likely to start in the states where assembly elections will be held next year.
They said that there will be no special drive in the states where local elections are being held, elections are being held or are underway.
The EC is saying that the election machinery is busy with the local body elections. Therefore, it cannot focus on SIR. It is known that assembly elections will be held in the states of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal next year.
Along with these five states, there is a chance of starting the Special Intensive Revision process in many states in the first phase. The SIR process has already been completed in Bihar.
The EC published the final list with 7.472 crore names on September 30. The work of starting the revision of voter lists in all states is underway. The Election Commission will take the final decision on the start, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said last Monday.
In a meeting held earlier this month, state Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) were told to be ready to start the SIR process within the next 15 days.
The CEOs were directed to publish the final voter lists state-wise after the process is completed. The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s website has the voter lists since 2008.
That was the last time the national capital underwent a comprehensive revision. While the last SIR was conducted in Uttarakhand in 2006, the voter list for that year is now available on the state Chief Electoral Officer’s website.
In most states, the last SIR process of voter lists was done between 2002 and 2004. The EC says the primary objective of SIR is to remove illegal immigrants and maintain the integrity of voter lists (Maxim News)
