Hyderabad, July 8 (Maxim News): India’s largest State Sailing Championships partnered with Marriot Hotels Hyderabad will commence on Tuesday with a record 60 plus entries from the State of Telangana. It will be a four day competition which will conclude on 12th July.

A press release said that a few practice races were held today at the Yacht Club. The races will be held in morning and afternoon sessions. The Championship will have three races—Optimist Race, State Championship and Laser class. The Optimist and State Sub Junior Championship will be held for under 16 years and Laser Class for the sailor above 16 years.

The Telangana Sailing Association (TSA) is organizing it in collaboration with the Yachting Association of India and the Yacht Club of Hyderabad plays a role of the host. The Telangana State Regatta is essentially an Inter-district championship in the Sub Junior under 16 and Junior under 18 categories. “We have received participation from more than 12 districts including Adilabad, Wanaparti, Mahbubnagar, Hyderabad, Vikarabad, Nalgonda and Rangareddy” said Suheim Sheikh, President and Coach at the Yacht Club.

The top seeds are Ajay Gajji of Vikarabad and Lakshmi Nookarathnam who topped the selection trials and is currently India No.5 and Preethi Kongara who is India No.3 both girls from Hyderabad.

The Hussain Sagar lake has a 150 year old history of Sailing with the British having set up the sport which has grown into many active Sailing Clubs on its shores.

“We expect to touch 100 sailors from the State alone in a few months from now and with this level of scaling we will be able nurture young talent from the state towards our goal of being a powerhouse of Sailing “ said Lt.Gen. KS Rao, Arjuna Awardee the President of TSA.

The Championships will be formally closed with a prize distribution ceremony on July 12 at 5pm. The function will be graced by Anjani Kumar, Hyderabad Police Commissioner.(Maxim News)
