New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday observed that the long-pending Bhojshala-Kamal Maula complex dispute in Madhya Pradesh is a sensitive matter and said it is prepared to conduct day-to-day hearings, if necessary, to ensure an early resolution.
The court also urged members of both the Hindu and Muslim communities to maintain peace and exercise restraint while the matter is under judicial consideration.
The apex court was hearing appeals filed by the Muslim side challenging the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s verdict concerning the historic Bhojshala complex in Dhar district.
During the proceedings, the bench remarked that the issue requires careful judicial consideration, given its sensitive nature and the potential impact of court observations.
The Supreme Court indicated that the existing arrangement for worship and prayers at the site should continue until the matter is finally decided.
The bench stated that the case is expected to be placed before an appropriate bench within 10 to 15 days. It also expressed its willingness to conduct daily hearings during the final stage of the proceedings to expedite the resolution of the dispute.
The Bhojshala-Kamal Maula complex in Dhar has remained a subject of legal and historical dispute for several years.
Hindu groups regard the site as the Bhojshala Saraswati Temple, dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, while Muslim groups identify it as the Kamal Maula Mosque.
The monument is currently protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Under the existing arrangement, Hindus are permitted to perform worship on specified days, while Muslims offer Friday prayers at the site.
The matter continues to remain before the courts, with the Supreme Court expected to hear the case in detail in the coming weeks.
