Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday announced that the state government will reimburse the cost of three domestic LPG cylinders every year for eligible families under the proposed Annapoorani Super Six Scheme.
The scheme will be launched on Pongal Day in 2027 and is expected to benefit around 1.30 crore families across Tamil Nadu. The government estimates the annual financial burden at approximately ₹4,000 crore.
The reimbursement scheme is linked to a major electoral promise made by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
LPG Cylinder Money to Be Credited Directly to Bank Accounts
Making a suo motu statement, Vijay said eligible beneficiaries will initially purchase LPG cylinders after completing the required registration.
The government will obtain beneficiary details from oil marketing companies after the cylinders are received. The reimbursement amount will then be credited directly to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
The scheme is intended to provide financial relief to households facing rising cooking fuel costs.
Who Will Be Eligible for the LPG Reimbursement?
According to the Chief Minister, families with an annual income of up to ₹2.5 lakh will be eligible for the benefit.
The scheme will also cover middle and marginal farmers and families of persons with disabilities, subject to the applicable eligibility conditions.
Vijay said the decision was taken after considering the financial burden faced by households due to disruptions in LPG availability and rising fuel prices.
Government Cites LPG Shortage and Rising Fuel Costs
The Chief Minister said there had been a shortage of LPG cylinders over the past four months following the conflict in the West Asian region.
The shortage had reportedly forced some families to turn to alternative cooking fuels, while higher fuel prices placed additional pressure on household budgets.
Vijay acknowledged that the state government was facing a financial crisis, but said the reimbursement was being introduced to reduce the burden on people and support their welfare.
He also said the decision would help the government fulfil the TVK’s electoral promise.
The Annapoorani Super Six Scheme is expected to become one of the major welfare initiatives of the Tamil Nadu government, with the first reimbursements scheduled to begin after its launch during Pongal 2027.
