Warangal, August 23: A Telangana Special Police constable was allegedly assaulted by a civil police constable and two civilians in Warangal.
The incident reportedly occurred late on August 19 at Kalinga Bar and Restaurant near Urs Gutta. The Mills Colony police station has jurisdiction over the area.
According to sources, the TSSP constable, identified as Manoj, allegedly created a disturbance while paying his bill. He was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Bar staff alerted the police after the incident. Beat constable Santhosh Reddy reached the restaurant and reportedly asked Manoj to wear his shirt.
Sources said Manoj was moving around without his shirt. He allegedly refused to comply despite repeated requests.
Video of Warangal Assault Goes Viral
The situation then escalated, according to the available account. Santhosh Reddy allegedly slapped Manoj during the exchange. Manoj reportedly responded by hitting the constable.
Santhosh Reddy then allegedly used his lathi to assault Manoj. Two civilians also reportedly joined the assault. One allegedly struck Manoj with a stick, while another punched him.
The assault continued for several minutes, according to sources. Manoj reportedly attempted to leave the location during the incident.
One of his colleagues also allegedly tried to intervene and stop the three men. However, the assault reportedly continued for some time.
A video recording of the incident surfaced on social media on Saturday. The footage subsequently went viral and drew attention to the incident.
The incident involved a constable attached to the TSSP 4th Battalion at Mamnoor Lines in Warangal. It also involved a civil police constable who was reportedly on beat duty.
Following the incident, senior police officials became aware of the matter. However, the police action reported so far has focused on Manoj.
Mills Colony police booked Manoj for allegedly obstructing a constable from discharging official duties. Police also booked him over the alleged nuisance at the restaurant.
Officials reportedly issued a notice to Manoj in connection with the case. Further action in the matter will depend on the findings of the police inquiry.
The viral video has brought renewed attention to the conduct of police personnel and civilians during disputes. The reported circumstances of the assault and the actions of those involved are expected to be examined by the authorities.
