Hyderabad, May 15: Renowned Telugu literary stalwart Sharada Ashokavardhan passed away at the age of 87 at her daughter’s residence in Banjara Hills on Wednesday night, bringing an end to a distinguished literary and cultural journey that spanned several decades.
Sharada Ashokavardhan earned widespread recognition for her immense contribution to Telugu literature through more than 80 books covering multiple literary genres including novels, poetry, plays, essays, lyrics, children’s literature and newspaper columns.
Her writings gained admiration for their simplicity, emotional depth and cultural richness. Literary circles regarded her as one of the most versatile women writers in Telugu literature.
Apart from her literary work, she also served for several years with All India Radio, where she became a familiar and respected voice among Telugu listeners.
Sharada Ashokavardhan Left Lasting Impact On Telugu Literature
Several songs and lyrical compositions written by Sharada Ashokavardhan attained immense popularity over the years. Among them, “Manasaayera Madhava” received wide appreciation from music lovers and devotional audiences alike.
Her famous “Ganapathi Suprabatham,” rendered by legendary singer M. Balamuralikrishna, continues to remain popular among devotees and classical music enthusiasts.
Many of her lyrics were also composed by noted music director Palagummi Viswanadham, further strengthening her influence in Telugu cultural and musical traditions.
Her literary works were translated into Tamil, Kannada and Hindi, helping her writings reach readers across different regions. Several academic researchers also pursued doctoral studies based on her literary contributions and thematic works.
Alongside literature, Sharada Ashokavardhan held important positions in public service. She served as Joint Director in the State Information Department and later worked as Director of Jawahar Bal Bhavan, where she contributed to cultural and educational activities for children.
During her illustrious career, she received three State Nandi Awards along with several prestigious honours including the Telugu University Award, Susheela Narayana Reddy Award and Rajyalakshmi Award.
She also gained recognition as a commentator for several major cultural and public programmes organised during the tenure of former Chief Minister and legendary actor N. T. Rama Rao.
Sharada Ashokavardhan is survived by four daughters, including a noted journalist, anchor and author.
Her demise marks the end of a remarkable literary era in Telugu culture. Writers, artists and admirers across the Telugu states expressed grief over her passing and remembered her enduring contribution to literature, music and public life.
