United Nations, June 7: The United States has blocked a joint proposal by Pakistan and China to designate the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its affiliate Majeed Brigade under the United Nations Security Council’s 1267 sanctions regime, according to international media reports. The move is being viewed as a diplomatic setback for Islamabad and Beijing.
Reports said the proposal sought to place the two groups on the UN sanctions list. However, the United States opposed the move, stating that there was insufficient evidence linking the organisations to Al Qaeda or the Islamic State, a key requirement under the 1267 sanctions framework.
According to reports, the United States maintained that the UN 1267 regime is specifically designed for entities associated with Al Qaeda and Islamic State. Washington argued that the available information did not establish such links with the BLA and the Majeed Brigade. France and the United Kingdom reportedly supported the US position, while Russia did not actively intervene in the process.
The development comes amid continued efforts by Pakistan to seek international action against the BLA. Reports indicate that Islamabad has been pursuing the designation through the UN sanctions mechanism for several months.
The decision is also being interpreted as a significant diplomatic development in the context of regional security discussions. Analysts cited in reports said the move reflects differing views among major powers regarding the application of UN sanctions mechanisms.
With the proposal facing a setback under the 1267 framework, reports suggest that Pakistan may explore alternative legal avenues within the United Nations system for seeking action against the groups.
