Hyderabad: Police arrested members of a dance group from Visakhapatnam for allegedly using a live python during a Ganesh immersion procession in Hyderabad, officials said.
The incident came to light after videos of a young woman dancing with a large python wrapped around her neck went viral on social media. The performance was reportedly staged to attract attention during the immersion procession.
Following the viral videos, Madanadpur police and Greater Hyderabad Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GHSPCA) officials began efforts to identify those involved. Officials reportedly monitored the group’s movements for several days before taking action.
Python Rescued, Cases Registered Under Wildlife Laws
Police and GHSPCA officials rescued the python and a chicken from the group. The python was taken to a veterinarian for examination and was found to be suffering from a serious mouth infection, officials said.
Cases were registered against the organisers under relevant provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act for allegedly using wild animals during the performance.
The python is currently undergoing treatment under the supervision of veterinary experts.
Officials warned that strict action would be taken against individuals who illegally use wild animals or subject them to distress for public performances.
