Hyderabad, April 16: Telangana is witnessing an intense heatwave due to a mix of climatic and urban factors. Temperatures range between 39 and 41 degree Celsius, but the real feel is significantly higher.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the absence of cloud cover is a key reason. Clear skies allow direct solar radiation to hit the surface, raising land temperatures rapidly.
This “direct solar hit” has created a persistent heat cycle. Similar conditions are reported across the Deccan Plateau, including parts of neighbouring regions.
Rapid urbanisation has worsened the situation. Large concrete structures trap heat and create urban heat islands. These areas retain heat during the day and release it slowly at night.
Localities like Hitec City, Madhapur, and Gachibowli are among the most affected. Glass buildings reflect sunlight onto roads, increasing surface temperatures.
During peak hours, between 12 pm and 4 pm, reflected heat intensifies conditions. For outdoor workers, the real feel temperature can reach 45 to 48 degree Celsius.
In contrast, greener areas like Jubilee Hills remain relatively cooler. Tree cover reduces heat absorption and can lower temperatures by up to 5 degrees.
Experts say the heatwave is not only seasonal. It is also linked to reduced greenery and infrastructure choices. Authorities advise people to avoid outdoor exposure during peak hours and stay hydrated.
The situation highlights the need for sustainable urban planning. Increasing green cover could help reduce extreme heat in the long term.
