He was speaking to media persons after a massive public meeting in support of all MVA candidates in the Latur district in Maharashtra on Wednesday. The public meeting was addressed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and other senior leaders.

He asserted that the Congress, as part of the MVA, was committed to a development plan to promote inclusive growth in Maharashtra. He highlighted the significance of the Maharashtra Assembly election, calling it a “turning point” for the state and the country, affecting both local governance and the broader social fabric. “This election is not just about Maharashtra, it’s about setting a course for the entire country,” he noted, adding that Congress’s vision aligned with Maharashtra’s rich legacy of reform and unity.

Uttam Kumar Reddy invoked Maharashtra’s heritage as a land of reformers and leaders like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Savitribai Phule, and Dr B.R. Ambedkar, saying Congress was committed to upholding their values of unity, justice, and respect. “The Congress path is one of solidarity and equality, rooted in Maharashtra’s legacy,” he stated. He argued that this approach sharply contrasted with the BJP’s alleged politics of division, accusing the party of dividing communities along religious and caste lines. “While their game is power, our mission is public service. The BJP seeks to divide; Congress works to unite,” he remarked.

He criticized the BJP for prioritizing political gain over Maharashtra’s development, alleging that the party had shifted 17 major industrial projects out of Maharashtra to Gujarat, a move he described as detrimental to Maharashtra’s economic interests. Uttam Kumar Reddy underscored that Congress aimed to restore the state’s “dignity and rightful place” in the national economy, promising to counter the BJP’s policies if the MVA coalition came to power.

Uttam Kumar Reddy also referenced the MVA’s success in previous elections, pointing to the coalition’s 31-seat win in the last Lok Sabha elections out of Maharashtra’s 48 seats. He outlined the coalition’s ambitious target of securing over 200 seats in the current Assembly elections, framing the contest as “more than a political race” but a movement to reclaim Maharashtra’s pride and progress.

Uttam Kumar Reddy elaborated on Congress’s “five guarantees” for Maharashtra, designed to address the needs of women, farmers, unemployed youth, and socially disadvantaged communities. The Mahalakshmi scheme, a major promise, includes monthly financial assistance of Rs 3,000 and free bus travel for women to promote economic empowerment. For farmers, Congress has committed to waiving loans up to Rs 3 lakh, with a Rs 50,000 bonus for timely repayment. Additionally, Reddy pledged a caste census and efforts to remove the 50% reservation cap to ensure fair opportunities for all communities, a step he noted Congress had initiated in Telangana with a comprehensive caste survey.

Furthering its commitment to Maharashtra’s socio-economic development, Congress proposed a transformative healthcare agenda, offering Rs 25 lakh in insurance coverage per family and free medications to alleviate medical costs. In addition, the party promised a monthly stipend of Rs 4,000 for unemployed youth to support them until they secure job opportunities.

Turning to the achievements in Telangana, Uttam Kumar Reddy said Congress had successfully implemented a welfare model to benefit the economically disadvantaged. He highlighted the introduction of free bus travel for approximately 1.05 crore women in Telangana, a scheme he described as “a promise of empowerment.” He also detailed Congress’s support for low-income families through subsidized LPG cylinders at Rs 500 for 49 lakh households and free electricity of up to 200 units for 50 lakh families, citing these as steps that Congress would look to replicate in Maharashtra.
