HYDRA To Link Three Lakes Via 7.5-km Nala in Hyderabad To Combat Urban Flooding

Hyderabad, July 9, 2025 (Maxim News): In a major push towards long-term flood mitigation in Hyderabad, the Hyderabad Road Development and Aerial Authority (HYDRA) has announced a strategic plan to interconnect Masab Cheruvu, Dilawar Khan Lake, and Pedda Amberpet Lake through a 7.5-kilometre stormwater nala. The proposed drainage corridor aims to prevent seasonal waterlogging and flooding in key residential zones.

HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath, who revealed the plan during a field inspection on Wednesday, said the nala will be redeveloped with adequate structural strength and capacity to handle heavy rainwater discharge in the future.

Comprehensive Field Survey and Flood Risk Review

Ranganath, accompanied by Ibrahimpatnam MLA Mal Reddy Ranga Reddy, conducted an on-site inspection of the flood-prone stretches along the proposed nala alignment. The inspection focused on vulnerable locations where inefficient drainage has led to frequent inundation during the monsoon.

During the visit to Jaalikunta, the team reviewed under-construction double-bedroom housing units where rainwater had reportedly entered the basement structures, causing delays in completion.

Opportunity for Proactive Development

The Commissioner highlighted that certain sections of the nala route currently have minimal construction, presenting a timely opportunity to widen and strengthen the nala to meet future urban drainage needs.

“We must take advantage of the existing open stretches to design a sustainable and future-ready stormwater system,” Ranganath said.

He assured that GHMC, Irrigation, and Revenue Departments will work together on a joint action plan to expedite the project.

Zero Tolerance for Encroachments and Debris Dumping

Ranganath issued a strong warning against illegal encroachments, especially the practice of dumping debris into nalas and filling up lakes. He stressed that such activities are major contributors to Hyderabad’s urban flooding.

“Encroaching lakes or draining nalas by dumping debris is a punishable offense. Strict legal action will be taken against violators,” he cautioned.

Inspections Continue Across City Outskirts

The HYDRAA chief also visited Karmanghat, Badangipet, and Raviryala to assess ongoing nala widening works and identify potential choke points. In Uday Nagar Colony, Karmanghat, he directed officials to immediately begin nala expansion to prevent further monsoon-related disruptions.

At Raviryala Lake, he assessed the risk of submergence for nearby residential areas and reviewed the condition of lake inflows and outflows.

A Model for Urban Flood Prevention

Concluding the inspection, Ranganath reiterated the importance of building climate-resilient infrastructure and protecting natural drainage systems in the city.

“Unless we protect our lakes and develop nalas responsibly, Hyderabad will remain vulnerable to flooding,” he said.
