IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts: Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall In Telangana

Hyderabad, July 20, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad has issued orange and yellow alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Hyderabad and several districts of Telangana over the next three to four days, beginning Monday.

In its latest bulletin released on Sunday morning, the IMD warned that Hyderabad and multiple Telangana districts are likely to experience sustained heavy downpours ranging between 64.5 mm and 204.4 mm, potentially causing local flooding and traffic disruptions.

Orange and Yellow Alerts Issued

An orange alert — indicating very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm) — has been issued for certain regions, while a yellow alert — signaling heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115.6 mm) — is in effect for others. The warnings are valid from Monday through Thursday, with the most intense rainfall expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In addition to Hyderabad, the following districts are under heavy to very heavy rainfall alert:

  • Jayashankar Bhupalpally
  • Mulugu
  • Bhadradri Kothagudem
  • Khammam
  • Nalgonda
  • Suryapet
  • Mahabubabad
  • Nagarkurnool
  • Wanaparthy
  • Warangal
  • Hanamkonda
  • Siddipet
  • Rangareddy
  • Sangareddy
  • Medak
  • Kamareddy
  • Nirmal
  • Nizamabad
  • Jagtial
  • Jangaon
  • Yadadri Bhuvanagiri
  • Medchal–Malkajgiri
  • Vikarabad

The IMD also forecasts light to moderate rain or thundershowers across most parts of Telangana till July 26.

Authorities Urge Caution

Local authorities have advised residents to stay alert, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas, and to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Commuters are urged to exercise caution, particularly during peak hours, as waterlogging and reduced visibility may hamper road traffic.

Emergency teams are reportedly on standby to respond to any incidents of urban flooding, tree falls, or other rain-related disruptions in the city and districts.
