Washington/San Francisco/Hyderabad, July 30 (Maxim News): The Indian Consulate General in San Francisco has issued a tsunami safety alert for Indian nationals residing in California, other US West Coast states, and Hawaii, following a massive 8.7 magnitude earthquake that struck early Wednesday near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.

The quake, one of the strongest in recent years, raised fears of a potential tsunami along the Pacific coastline. In response, Indian authorities in the United States are closely monitoring the developing situation.

Consulate Urges Indian Community to Stay Alert

The Consulate took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share a public advisory:

“The Consulate General of India in San Francisco is monitoring the potential tsunami threat following the recent 8.7 magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. Indian nationals in California, other US West Coast states, and Hawaii are advised to take the following steps.”

The advisory recommends the following precautions:

  • Stay updated with alerts from local emergency services and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
  • Keep emergency kits, important documents, and communication devices ready.
  • Avoid coastal and low-lying areas until official clearance is given.
  • Follow evacuation instructions issued by local authorities, if any.
  • Remain in contact with the Indian Consulate for any emergency assistance.

Seismic Activity Raises Global Concerns

The earthquake, which struck off the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, has triggered tsunami advisories across the Pacific Ocean region, including for parts of Japan, Alaska, Hawaii, and the US West Coast.
