Chief Commissioner of the Election Commission of India (ECI), Gyanesh Kumar, announced that the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) will soon begin in twelve states and union territories. Speaking in Delhi on Sunday, he confirmed that the first phase of the exercise had been completed successfully.
Gyanesh Kumar said that phase one of the SIR covered 7.5 crore people in Bihar. He stated that no objections were raised regarding the conduct of the process in the state, marking it as a successful and transparent revision effort. The Chief Commissioner added, “SIR was conducted eight times from 1951 to 2004. After 21 years, we are successfully completing SIR again.”
The Election Commission has described the SIR as a crucial exercise aimed at verifying the accuracy of voter lists and ensuring that genuine voters are properly registered. In the coming weeks, the Commission will conduct the second phase across 12 states and union territories, expanding the verification efforts beyond Bihar. Gyanesh Kumar emphasized that officials will visit each household three times to verify voter details and encourage full participation from all eligible citizens.
He also highlighted the Commission’s commitment to creating political awareness about the revision process. The ECI aims to ensure that the voter registration rolls are clean, error-free, and inclusive ahead of the next round of elections.
The announcement marks a major step toward strengthening transparency and voter confidence in the electoral system as India resumes the SIR initiative after more than two decades.
