According to a new report from the central government, an average of 15 people die daily on the highways of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana due to overspeeding. In 2023 alone, over 3,500 people lost their lives in such accidents on the national and state highways of the two Telugu states. Officials said that nearly 30 percent of all road accident deaths in the region were linked to speeding.

Between 2020 and 2023, more than 25,000 people died in speeding-related road accidents in Telangana. The state ranks seventh nationwide in deaths caused by overspeeding, surpassing larger states such as Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha. Experts pointed out that speeding accounts for more than 80 percent of total road accidents in Telangana, making it one of the most critical public safety concerns.

Road safety experts have urged authorities to enforce stricter speed limits and install visible traffic signs, particularly near junctions and curves. They emphasized that a lack of proper signage was a major factor in many fatal accidents. Experts also noted that while tools like speed laser guns help temporarily, sustainable solutions must come through better road design, improved visibility, and consistent enforcement.

With casualties continuing to rise, road safety advocates are pressing for coordinated action from both state and central authorities to curb the growing threat of overspeeding and to promote safer driving habits among motorists. (Maxim News)
