Minister Mohammed Azharuddin Participates In Congress Protest Against Renaming Of MGNREGS

The MGNREGS renaming protest organised by the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee drew large participation at MG Road in Secunderabad, with Minority Welfare Minister Mohammed Azharuddin joining the demonstration. The protest opposed the BJP-led Central Government’s move to rename the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The programme followed a nationwide call given by the All India Congress Committee and reflected growing opposition within the Congress party to the proposed change.

Senior Congress leaders, Ministers, MLAs, party functionaries, and activists from across Telangana took part in the MGNREGS renaming protest. The gathering highlighted the party’s collective stand against what it described as an attempt to alter the identity of a major rural welfare scheme. Meanwhile, party workers raised slogans and displayed portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, reinforcing the symbolic focus of the protest.

During the demonstration, Minister Mohammed Azharuddin voiced strong support for the party’s position. He stated that “MGNREGS is one of the most important welfare schemes designed to provide employment security, dignity and economic stability to rural families, inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.” He also stressed that the scheme holds deep significance for rural households across the country. Therefore, he argued, any move to rename it carries wider social and moral implications.

The Minister further reiterated that removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the scheme would undermine its core values. He said any such move amounts to an attack on Gandhian ideals and the rights of the rural poor. He affirmed that the Congress party will continue to resist these efforts and will stand firmly with farmers, labourers, and marginalised communities. His remarks drew strong responses from party supporters present at the venue.

Meanwhile, Asaduddin, the son of Minister Mohammed Azharuddin, was also present at the protest. His participation was noted as a reflection of the family’s commitment to public causes and democratic values. The event also featured patriotic songs and slogans, which organisers said symbolised a collective rejection of the Centre’s decision and a reaffirmation of the original spirit of MGNREGS.

Later, the TPCC announced that similar protests will be held across all districts of Telangana. These programmes form part of a two-day statewide agitation against the renaming of MGNREGS. Party leaders said the campaign will continue until the Centre withdraws its move.
