Electricity Amendment Rules 2024 Simplify New Power Connections
Hyderabad, Feb. 4 (Maxim News): Electricity Amendment Rules 2024 have brought major changes to the process of getting new power connections across the country.
The Union Ministry of Power has announced simplified and time bound procedures, aiming to end delays and reduce the need for people to visit offices repeatedly.
According to the new Electricity Amendment Rules, consumers will now receive new electricity connections within fixed deadlines, improving transparency and service delivery.
As per the new rules, which will come into force from tomorrow, clear timelines have been set based on location. In metro cities, power utilities must provide a new electricity connection within three days of application.
Meanwhile, in municipal areas, the maximum time allowed is seven days. In rural areas, the rules mandate that connections must be given within fifteen days from the date of application. However, in hilly regions or places with geographical difficulties, authorities have been given up to thirty days.
If setting up poles or transformers is required, the Union Ministry of Power has fixed a maximum deadline of ninety days to complete the process. The Electricity Amendment Rules 2024 also introduce a fully online application system.
Consumers seeking a new connection no longer need to submit physical documents or visit electricity offices. Instead, they must apply through the official website of the concerned DISCOM.
Applicants only need to scan and upload required documents such as Aadhaar cards and property papers.
Also, consumers can track the status of their application online at any time. If delays occur due to official negligence, the system will automatically escalate the matter to higher authorities.
Meanwhile, the new rules offer flexibility for residents of apartments and gated communities.
People living in high rise buildings, apartments, and gated layouts can now choose either individual electricity connections or a single point connection for the entire society.
This decision will be taken through a voting process among society members, giving residents more control over their electricity arrangements.
In rural areas, the Electricity Amendment Rules make smart meters mandatory for every new electricity connection.
This step aims to prevent irregularities in meter readings and billing.
In addition, consumers installing rooftop solar panels up to ten kilowatts will no longer need a technical feasibility study.

Therefore, the move is expected to encourage the use of solar power and promote clean energy adoption.
Overall, the Union Ministry of Power believes these amendments will improve the performance of DISCOMs.
The government also expects better transparency, faster services, and improved consumer satisfaction through the Electricity Amendment Rules 2024. (Maxim News)
