Hyderabad, Mar 13 (Maxim News): A civil rights group has opposed the house arrest of activist Syed Bilal. The group linked the action to the Musi River Front Development project. It issued a press note on March 13. So the issue has drawn fresh attention.
The group said Syed Bilal works for Musi riverbank residents. It said he also works for slum dwellers. Therefore, it condemned the house arrest. It said such steps go against democratic values.
The group said the Chief Minister Revanth Reddy plans to release a project presentation. It asked the government to make the report public. Moreover, it asked the state to seek public opinion. So it demanded wider consultations.
The group said many activists raised similar demands. It said social groups and experts sought talks from the start. In addition, it cited a letter by activist Medha Patkar. She wrote to the Chief Minister on the Gandhi Sarovar plan. Therefore, the issue gained public debate.
The group said it does not oppose river cleaning. It said Musi revival must go ahead. However, it opposed eviction without rehabilitation. It also opposed removal of longtime residents. So it asked the state to protect housing rights.
The group said people who built homes under rules must not suffer. It also said riverbank families need fair resettlement. Therefore, it asked the state to ensure justice.
The group also raised concern about dissent. It said peaceful protest is a democratic right. So it asked the government to allow open debate. It warned against curbs on activists.
The group demanded an end to house arrests. It also asked the state to consult civil groups. In addition, it asked the government to respect housing rights. Therefore, it called for a balanced river project.
The group also spoke on the Gandhi Sarovar plan. It asked the state to limit it to the Bapu Ghat area. For now, it said dialogue remains the best way forward. (Maxim News)
