The incident took place during the Baisakhi festival at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. Thousands had gathered, unaware of restrictions under British rule.

On April 13, 1919, troops led by Reginald Dyer opened fire without warning. The firing continued for several minutes on the unarmed crowd.

More than 1,600 rounds were fired during the attack. Official reports recorded 379 deaths and about 1,200 injuries.

However, estimates suggest the toll exceeded 1,000 deaths. The garden’s narrow exit made escape difficult for the crowd.

Therefore, the massacre became a turning point in the independence movement. It exposed the brutality of colonial rule and intensified the demand for freedom.
