Hyderabad, April 25 (Maxim News): The Telangana government received major relief on Saturday after Governor Jishnu Dev Varma/Shiv Pratap Shukla approved the nominations of Minister Mohammad Azharuddin and Prof. Kodandaram to the Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota.
The long pending decision ends months of suspense over the two nominations sent by the Telangana Cabinet on August 30 last year.
Official sources said the Governor signed the file on Saturday. A formal gazette notification is expected shortly.
The approval is especially significant for Minister Mohammad Azharuddin.
Azharuddin had joined the state Cabinet without being a member of either House. Under constitutional rules, a minister must become a member of the Legislature within six months of taking oath.
That deadline was set to expire on April 30, creating uncertainty over his continuation in the Cabinet.
With only days left, the pending file had become a matter of concern for the state government.
Recently, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy personally met the Governor at Raj Bhavan and requested an early decision on the nominations. Following that meeting, the Governor has now cleared both names.
Political observers said the decision comes as a major boost for the Congress government.
It also strengthened Revanth Reddy’s position, as Azharuddin’s ministerial berth was considered politically important.
Prof. Kodandaram’s approval is also being seen as a significant development in Telangana politics, given his long public and academic role.
The delay in the nominations had triggered legal and political debate over the Governor’s pending decision.
Now, with the file cleared, the government has avoided a constitutional complication and secured continuity in the Cabinet.
The official gazette notification is expected to be issued soon, after which both leaders will formally assume office as MLCs. (Maxim News)
