Vijay | Joseph Vijay took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar administered the oath at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.
Thousands of supporters gathered at the venue. Fans raised slogans and waved party flags during the ceremony. Moreover, TVK workers celebrated across Chennai after Vijay assumed office.
Along with Vijay, nine ministers also took oath. The government allotted portfolios to seven ministers immediately. However, officials are still finalising departments for two ministers.
Vijay | TVK records massive victory in first election
Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam entered electoral politics for the first time under Vijay’s leadership. Earlier, Vijay stepped away from active cinema and launched the party with a focus on public service.
Soon after entering politics, Vijay led TVK to a major victory in the Assembly elections. As a result, he created a rare political record by becoming Chief Minister in his first election itself.
Political observers compared Vijay’s rise to former actor politicians M. G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa. Both leaders also moved from cinema into politics and later became Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, TVK supporters described the victory as a turning point in Tamil Nadu politics. The party managed to challenge established political forces and emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly.
Vijay kept the Home and General Administration departments with himself. In addition, Aadhav Arjun received Sports and Excise, while Sengottaiyan got the Public Works Department.
Similarly, Venkataraman took charge of School Education and N. Anand received Municipal Administration. Nirmal Kumar got the Electricity department. Rajamohan received Adi Dravidar Welfare. Arun Raj took charge of Commercial Taxes and Registration.
However, the government has not yet announced portfolios for Keerthana and TK Prabhu.
Huge celebrations broke out across Chennai after the swearing in ceremony. Party workers installed massive cutouts of Vijay in many areas. Furthermore, supporters decorated roads near the stadium with TVK banners and flags.
