Balochistan, May 24: A massive explosion near a railway station in Quetta city of Pakistan’s Balochistan province reportedly killed 24 people and injured more than 50 others on Sunday.
According to local media reports, the blast occurred in the Chaman Phatak railway station area while a train was passing through the signal point.
Officials suspect the explosion was caused after a vehicle loaded with explosives rammed onto the railway track and detonated near the moving train.
Authorities believe the incident could be a suicide attack, though an official confirmation is still awaited.
Reports stated that several of the deceased were believed to be Pakistani army personnel and their family members.
The explosion severely damaged nearby vehicles parked close to the railway station. One of the train bogies was also badly destroyed due to the powerful impact.
Eyewitnesses said the intensity of the blast shattered vehicle windows and sent debris flying into nearby buildings, triggering panic among local residents.
Soon after the explosion, rescue teams and security personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Following the incident, authorities declared a medical emergency in hospitals across Quetta city.
Doctors, nurses, and medical staff were instructed to cancel leave and immediately report for emergency duty to treat the injured victims.
Security agencies also placed the entire city on high alert and tightened security arrangements in sensitive areas.
Officials suspended some train services after the blast and appealed to residents to avoid visiting the accident site.
People were also advised to remain indoors unless necessary as security forces continued search and rescue operations in the area.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to identify those responsible for the deadly attack.
