Chennai, May 25: The opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) faced another setback on Monday after three rebel MLAs resigned from their Assembly memberships amid growing political turmoil in Tamil Nadu.
The MLAs who resigned are K. Maragatham Kumaravel, S. Jayakumar and P. Sathyabama. They met Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar and submitted their resignation letters.
Political circles in Tamil Nadu are speculating that the three legislators may soon join the Tamil Vetri Kazhagam led by actor and politician Joseph Vijay.
AIADMK Rebels Backed TVK Government
Maragatham Kumaravel represents Madurantakam constituency, while Jayakumar and Sathyabama were elected from Perundurai and Dharapuram constituencies respectively.
The resignations have intensified the internal crisis within the AIADMK. Reports said the three MLAs were among 25 rebel legislators who supported the TVK led government during a recent trust vote.
Following the vote, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami reportedly expelled the rebel MLAs from the party for anti party activities.
Political observers believe the resignations could strengthen the ruling TVK government while adding pressure on the AIADMK leadership ahead of future political developments in the state.
The latest episode has once again highlighted the growing factionalism and leadership challenges within the opposition party in Tamil Nadu.
