Kolkata, June 23: Internal tensions in the Trinamool Congress intensified on Monday as party chief Mamata Banerjee moved to reinforce her position amid challenges from a dissident faction.
According to party developments, a day after a rebel group announced changes to the leadership structure, a fresh list was prepared and submitted to the Election Commission in the name of the National Working Committee.
The revised list reportedly named Mamata Banerjee as chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress, signalling that the official leadership continues to claim control over the party structure.
TMC Internal Rift Deepens Over Leadership Claims
Meanwhile, the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee held a meeting in Kolkata and announced the formation of an alternative 30 member national executive committee.
The group declared itself as the real Trinamool Congress and appointed Arup Roy as chairperson. It also assigned responsibilities to Firhad Hakim and Arup Biswas.
Ritabrata Banerjee said the leadership was elected unanimously during a special meeting of representatives. He added that details of district committees and district presidents would be announced soon.
At the same time, the rebel camp stated that it does not intend to completely sideline Mamata Banerjee and wants her to continue as a leader within the party.
Reports also indicated that the party issued show cause notices to several senior leaders over alleged anti party activities.
Those reportedly named in the notices include Arup Roy, Arup Biswas, Firhad Hakim, Rathin Ghosh, Javed Khan and Sabina Yasmin.
The latest developments have intensified discussion around the future leadership structure of the Trinamool Congress and the impact of the internal dispute on West Bengal politics.
