Venezuela Earthquake/Internet/Hyderabad, june 25 (Maxim News) A series of earthquakes have rocked Venezuela. Two earthquakes within a minute of each other have caused buildings to collapse in the capital Caracas and many other areas. Millions of people are believed to be trapped under the rubble, with many deaths expected. As the situation worsened, Venezuela declared a state of emergency across the country. A war-like rescue operation was launched to rescue those trapped under the rubble.
According to the US Geological Survey ( USGS) , the first earthquake struck near San Felipe, Venezuela, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was located about 284 km west of Caracas. It was followed a minute later by another earthquake measuring 7.5. The second earthquake was located 293 km west of Caracas.
Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, confirmed that there had been a huge loss of life in the disaster. She expressed her deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. She said that rescue operations were continuing rapidly in the earthquake-affected areas. However, she did not disclose the death toll. Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey warned that the impact of these earthquakes could be very severe. The initial estimate of the death toll was between 10,000 and 100,000. However, it was clarified that this was only an estimate based on scientific models. The actual death toll would be known only after the rescue operations were completed.
Searching for victims under the rubble
Rescue teams have been searching for people trapped under the rubble after several buildings collapsed in Caracas and other earthquake-affected areas. Heavy machinery and special rescue teams have been deployed. Police security has been set up at the damaged buildings. People have been advised not to go indoors due to the possibility of aftershocks. The US Embassy in Caracas has issued special instructions to its citizens. It has been advised to stay away from damaged buildings. It has been advised to trust only official statements. It has been told to move to safer areas if necessary. (Maxim News)
