New Delhi, June 27: Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has criticised the Central government over its response to the ongoing Gaza conflict, alleging that India has moved away from its long-standing position on Palestine. The BJP rejected the remarks, accusing the Congress of playing vote bank politics.
In an article published in the media, Sonia Gandhi said India had remained largely silent over civilian deaths in Gaza and urged the government to reaffirm its historical commitment to the Palestinian cause.
Sonia Gandhi referred to findings of the United Nations Independent Commission of Inquiry and said thousands of children had been killed or injured during the conflict. She argued that the international community had failed to end the violence and described India’s approach as a “lone silent voice” that could not be justified on moral or national interest grounds.
She called on the Centre to respond more clearly while maintaining India’s long-standing ties with Palestine.
The BJP strongly rejected the criticism. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused the Congress of using foreign policy for vote bank politics.
He said India has repeatedly clarified its position on the Gaza conflict, supported ceasefire-related resolutions at the United Nations, and provided humanitarian assistance to Palestine.
The exchange comes amid continuing political debate over India’s diplomatic approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
