Sony RX10 V Unveiled with 24-600mm Zoom, AI Autofocus and 4K 120fps Video

Hyderabad: Sony has officially introduced the RX10 V, its long awaited successor to the RX10 IV, bringing a major redesign, faster performance, AI powered autofocus, and significantly improved video capabilities. Designed for travel, wildlife, sports, and street photography enthusiasts, the new superzoom compact camera combines a versatile 24-600mm equivalent optical zoom lens with a 20.1 megapixel 1 inch stacked CMOS sensor.

While the camera delivers substantial upgrades across photography and video, its $2,300 price tag makes it one of the most expensive compact cameras currently available.

Sony RX10 V Brings Faster Performance and Smarter AI Features

The RX10 V retains the highly versatile 9.1-210mm f/2.4-4.0 lens, offering a 24-600mm full frame equivalent focal range that has made the RX10 series popular among photographers who need extreme zoom without changing lenses.

Sony has continued using the 20.1MP 1 inch stacked sensor, which delivers excellent image quality, impressive low light performance, and minimal rolling shutter distortion. However, some users may find it disappointing that Sony did not increase the sensor resolution after nearly a decade since the RX10 IV. The new model also removes the built in flash found on its predecessor.

Performance receives a noticeable boost thanks to Sony’s latest image processor. The RX10 V can now shoot at 30 frames per second using the electronic shutter with blackout free shooting, up from 24 fps on the RX10 IV.

Sony has also introduced its Continuous Shooting Speed Boost feature, allowing photographers to instantly switch to maximum burst speed when capturing fast moving subjects.

Autofocus has been completely revamped with Sony’s latest AI technology. Powered by a dedicated AI processing unit similar to the one found in the Alpha A7 V, the camera can recognize and track:

  • Humans
  • Birds
  • Animals
  • Insects
  • Cars
  • Trains
  • Airplanes

The system intelligently detects faces, eyes, heads, and bodies while maintaining focus even when subjects turn away, move unpredictably, or become partially obscured.

Continuous autofocus and auto exposure calculations have doubled to 60 times per second, while autofocus coverage expands to 575 phase detection points, covering approximately 70 percent of the sensor.

Professional Grade Video Features

Sony has made the biggest improvements in video recording.

The RX10 V now captures 4K video at up to 60fps in 10 bit using the full sensor width with no pixel binning, delivering sharper and more detailed footage. It also supports All Intra, XAVC S, and XAVC HS recording formats.

For slow motion creators, the camera offers:

  • 4K at 120fps with a slight crop
  • Full HD at 240fps for ultra slow motion

Professional creators also benefit from:

  • S Log3 recording for greater dynamic range
  • Support for importing up to 16 LUTs
  • Improved image stabilization for smoother handheld walking shots
  • 4K 30fps live streaming via USB

Redesigned Body with Better Controls

Sony has completely redesigned the RX10 V, replacing the older rounded body with a more modern design inspired by the Alpha A7 V series.

The camera now features:

  • Larger ergonomic grip
  • Dedicated AF ON button
  • Joystick controller
  • Three control dials
  • Rear control wheel
  • Dual top dial with Photo, Video and Slow & Quick mode selector

The electronic viewfinder has been upgraded to 3.69 million dots, while the rear LCD now offers 1.62 million dots for improved clarity.

However, the display only tilts and does not fully articulate, making it less suitable for vloggers and selfie creators.

Battery and Connectivity

The RX10 V uses Sony’s NP FZ100 battery, providing up to 630 shots on a single charge.

Connectivity options include:

  • Single UHS II SD card slot
  • USB C
  • Micro HDMI
  • 3.5mm microphone input
  • 3.5mm headphone jack

The faster USB C connection supports quicker charging and data transfers.

Price and Availability

Sony has opened pre orders for the RX10 V at $2,300, with shipping expected to begin in August.

Although the premium pricing places it well above most compact cameras, the RX10 V delivers an unmatched combination of 24-600mm zoom, AI powered autofocus, 30fps burst shooting, and professional 4K video, making it an attractive option for photographers and content creators seeking an all in one camera without the need for interchangeable lenses.
