Hyderabad, August 12 (Maxim News): The Uppaada coast protection project in Kakinada district has moved forward with a key technical agreement. The Andhra Pradesh government has assigned IIT Madras the design and technical supervision work for the project.
The agreement was signed at the Mangalagiri camp office on Wednesday in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. The project aims to protect the Uppaada coastal belt in the Pithapuram Assembly constituency from severe coastal erosion.
The proposed project has an estimated cost of Rs 323 crore. The Central government has approved funding under the National Disaster Management Fund. The State Disaster Management Authority will serve as the nodal agency.
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board will act as the executive agency. It will oversee the implementation of the construction works at the ground level.
Uppaada coast protection project to use scientific design
IIT Madras experts will prepare the design after conducting detailed scientific studies. They will assess the intensity of coastal erosion and the impact of sea currents and waves.
The experts will also study other factors that affect the coastline. Based on these findings, they will develop suitable protection structures for the Uppaada coast.
In addition, IIT Madras will provide technical supervision during project implementation. This role aims to ensure that the construction follows the approved technical standards.
The government considers the project important because coastal erosion has affected several stretches of Uppaada. The erosion also poses risks to nearby fishing communities and coastal settlements.
Furthermore, the project seeks to provide a long term solution based on local coastal conditions. Authorities expect the scientific design to help improve the effectiveness and durability of the protection works.
The agreement with IIT Madras has now completed an important stage in the project process. District authorities are preparing to begin the works from November.
The Uppaada coastline has faced recurring erosion due to wave action and changing coastal conditions. As a result, coastal protection has remained a major concern for residents and fishing communities in the area.
The involvement of IIT Madras is expected to bring specialised technical expertise to the project. The state agencies will coordinate the administrative and construction requirements.
