Parandur airport project to be dropped by Tamil Nadu government, announces CM Vijay

The Tamil Nadu Government has dropped the proposed Parandur Greenfield airport project. In a suo moto statement at the Assembly today, Chief Minister C.Joseph Vijay assured that the Government will drop the project as it was badly affecting the livelihood of the farmers and the villagers living in and around the area. He said that alternate sites would be assessed for a new airport.

The Chief Minister said that the Government would join with the Airport Authority of India in developing the fifth terminal of the Chennai Airport. He said that the approach road and a fly over will be planned accordingly so that a total of 55 million passengers could be handled.

The DMK members walked out of the Assembly as the Speaker J.C.D.Prabhakar did not allow DMK member and former Minister Thangam Thennarasu to seek clarification on the announcement by the Chief Minister. The Speaker said that 110 statements cannot be taken for a debate.
