Delhi/Hyderabad, Sept 19 (Maxim News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India’s per capita carbon emissions are less than half the global average, asserting that the country is highlighting this fact on international platforms.
Modi made the remarks while inaugurating an international conference on ‘The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics’ in Delhi. He also launched the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Mobile App during the event.
The two-day conference, organised by the NGT, brings together judges and judicial representatives from 17 countries to discuss major environmental and climate challenges. Participants are also examining gaps in policy formulation, implementation and enforcement, along with ways to strengthen environmental governance and institutional cooperation.
PM Modi Calls for Collective Action on Climate Challenges
Addressing the gathering, Modi said India has historically placed strong emphasis on nature and environmental protection and is drawing on its cultural traditions while addressing modern climate challenges.
He said the responsibility for carbon emissions has often been placed on developing countries despite differences in historical and per capita emissions.
“The responsibility for carbon emissions has been wrongly placed on developing countries, whereas the historical truth is that India’s contribution to per capita carbon emissions is less than half the global average,” Modi said.
He further claimed that per capita carbon emissions in developed countries are six times higher than India’s, saying India has consistently highlighted this comparison at international forums.
Modi also called for greater collective efforts to address climate challenges and said India is presenting its environmental traditions and practices to the world.
Referring to India’s participation in global climate discussions, the Prime Minister recalled that during COP21 in Paris, India launched the book Convenient Action: Continuity for Change.
He said India was seeking to establish new benchmarks for environmental protection by taking the world along in its climate efforts.
The conference is focusing on the role of judicial institutions in addressing environmental challenges, including strengthening enforcement mechanisms and improving cooperation between countries and institutions.
