United Nations/Hyderabad, Sept 27 (Maxim News): Russia has backed India’s candidature for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov calling for greater representation of Asia, Africa and Latin America in the UN body.
Addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Lavrov said Russia supported the permanent candidatures of both India and Brazil. He also said the interests of the African continent should be taken into account in any Security Council reform.
Russia Opposes Additional Western Seats
Lavrov said Russia’s position was that Security Council reform should not involve additional seats for Western countries, specifically mentioning Germany and Japan.
He argued that the Council’s representation should be broadened to include Asia, Africa and Latin America. Russia’s position comes amid wider discussions among UN member states on expanding both permanent and non-permanent membership.
India has consistently called for reform of the Security Council and greater representation for developing countries, including permanent-category membership for major countries from the Global South.
Lavrov also highlighted Russia’s cooperation with partners through groupings including BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and the Eurasian Economic Union.
He said Russia was promoting what it described as a common agenda focused on international cooperation and specific projects. He also stressed the importance of international information security and said the United Nations should play a central role in discussions on the issue.
The remarks came during the high-level week of the 81st UN General Assembly, whose general debate is being held in New York from September 22 to 29.
