Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy said hospice care was as essential as hospital care, stressing the importance of empathy, compassion and dignity for patients nearing the end of life. He urged the state government to help showcase Sparsh Hospice’s model across the country.

Founder Trustee Dr. M. Subrahmanyam said the NABH accreditation recognised the quality and standards of the institution’s palliative care services.

Established in 2011 by the Rotary Club of Banjara Hills, Sparsh Hospice began with 12 beds in rented premises on Road No. 12, Banjara Hills. It later moved to its present 82-bed facility, built on government-leased land with donor contributions of approximately ₹15 crore.

The hospice now serves around 200 patients and recently opened an eight-bed neuro-palliative care unit. Nearly 90% of its patients receive care entirely free of cost, while the remaining patients pay nominal amounts based on their ability to contribute.

The institution employs nearly 100 staff members and provides home-based palliative care. Its monthly operating expenditure is around ₹50 lakh, supported mainly by individual donors, corporate contributions and anonymous donors.

Sparsh Hospice has also collaborated with the Indian School of Business to explore ways to expand palliative care services in Hyderabad and beyond. It has trained 257 individuals in palliative care.

Living Will Digital Vault Launched With Microsoft

Jagadish Babu Ramadugu said the hospice had established South India’s first Living Will Clinic last year to help people understand and document their healthcare wishes.

The Living Will Digital Vault, developed with Microsoft, aims to make creating, updating and accessing a Living Will easier through a secure digital platform. The initiative seeks to promote personal autonomy, dignity and informed decisions about future medical care.
