Kolkata, May 31: A political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after BJP leaders alleged that former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee pressured a private hospital in Kolkata to admit her nephew and Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee despite medical reports indicating that hospitalization was not required.
The allegations surfaced after BJP state spokesperson Debjit Sarkar shared a purported video on social media, claiming it showed Mamata Banerjee confronting the Chief Executive Officer of a private hospital at Minto Park in central Kolkata on Saturday night.
According to Sarkar, the hospital’s medical assessment reportedly stated that Abhishek Banerjee had not sustained any major injuries and did not require admission. He alleged that attempts were made to influence the hospital’s decision despite the medical findings.
Incident Followed Sonarpur Attack
The developments came hours after Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly harassed, heckled and assaulted by a group of local residents while visiting the family of a slain Trinamool Congress worker in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district.
Following the incident, security personnel escorted Banerjee from the area and took him to a private hospital near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in Kolkata for medical evaluation.
Later, Mamata Banerjee reached the hospital and reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment being provided. Subsequently, Banerjee was shifted to another private hospital in the Minto Park area for further examination.
Hospital Says Admission Not Required
After conducting a detailed medical examination, doctors at the Minto Park hospital reportedly concluded that Abhishek Banerjee did not require hospitalization.
According to the medical certificate issued by the hospital, no major internal injuries were detected and the TMC leader was fully conscious and stable. Doctors prescribed medicines, including a digestive tablet, and advised that admission was unnecessary.
Mamata Alleges Political Pressure
Reacting to the hospital’s decision, Mamata Banerjee alleged that both hospitals declined to admit her nephew because of pressure from the state administration.
Speaking to reporters, she claimed that a senior Kolkata Police officer had influenced the hospital authorities not to admit Banerjee. She also alleged that political motives were behind the handling of the incident.
Mamata further stated that Rahul Gandhi had contacted her and assured support if Banerjee required treatment outside West Bengal.
Political Row Intensifies
The BJP has accused the Trinamool Congress leadership of attempting to misuse medical institutions for political purposes, while the TMC has maintained that Banerjee was denied proper medical attention.
Abhishek Banerjee later returned to his residence in south Kolkata, where he continues to recover under medical supervision.
