Hyderabad, April 29: The West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer on Tuesday said repolling would be conducted if allegations of EVM button tampering are found to be true during the ongoing Assembly elections.
The statement came after the BJP alleged that electronic voting machine buttons were taped in polling booths in the Falta area of Diamond Harbour constituency.
Bengal EVM Tampering Allegations Spark Row
According to the BJP, polling officials allegedly obstructed voters and blocked access to the party’s button on EVMs.
Amit Malviya raised the issue on social media and demanded immediate repolling in booths where the alleged tampering occurred.
He claimed voters were unable to cast votes for the BJP because the EVM buttons were covered with tape.
The BJP also released a video alleging irregularities during polling in Diamond Harbour constituency.
Responding to the allegations, the state Chief Electoral Officer said complaints would be examined at the field level.
Officials clarified that repolling would be ordered if any EVM button was found tampered with.
Meanwhile, polling continued in the second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections.
Election officials said voter turnout crossed 40 percent by 11 am in several districts.
Purba Bardhaman recorded 44.50 percent polling, while Hooghly reported 43.12 percent turnout.
Kolkata North registered 38.39 percent voting and Kolkata South recorded 36.78 percent turnout.
The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
