Hyderabad: The government has allocated 100 additional Overseas Scholarship seats exclusively for Christian minority students each year. The new quota comes over and above the existing 500 scholarships provided under the Minority Overseas Scholarship Scheme.
With this decision, the total number of scholarships available annually has increased to 600. Officials said the move aims to expand educational opportunities for minority students seeking higher studies abroad.
The earlier 500 seat allocation will continue for existing minority communities under the present structure.
Existing 500 Seats Distribution
Under the current quota system, Muslims receive 480 seats, which accounts for 96 percent of the total 500 scholarships.
Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis receive five seats each. Each of these communities holds one percent of the allocation.
Officials clarified that if any seats remain vacant under the original quota categories, those seats may be reallocated to Muslim students as per the existing policy.
Total Seats Rise to 600
With the addition of 100 seats for Christian students, the annual scholarship count now stands at 600.
The Overseas Scholarship Scheme supports eligible minority students who secure admissions in recognised foreign universities. It helps cover tuition fees and other approved academic expenses.
Education groups welcomed the increase and said the added quota would benefit deserving students from Christian minority communities.
Further guidelines on applications, eligibility and seat distribution are expected to be issued by the concerned department soon.
